Grapeseed Co. Skincare : Fresh from the Vineyard to Your Face

Here at The Grapeseed Company, we source local wine waste as the antioxidant rich base of our entire product line. Fall marks harvest season in the wine world, which means we collaborate with wineries up and down the California and Oregon coast to source red wine grapeseeds. This morning, my friend and Whole Foods Market Forager, Stacey, and I drove up to the Santa Ynez Valley to visit Bernat Winery and Vineyard for a grapeseed pickup.

Here's a peek inside our day and a little behind the scenes view of how we bring your fresh, vineyard to face organic skincare and bath products!

Here I am on the Bernat Vineyard grounds, checking out the grapes...

Meanwhile, Sam and his team have been pressing off syrah grapes this morning,

and have created this wine waste from the process of squeezing
juice from the grape.

The red wine seeds are amazing for your skin! They are concentrated with potent antioxidants and a powerful polyphenol, called resveratrol, that are the base of our product line at The Grapeseed Co.

We take the wine waste back to our facility in downtown Santa Barbara, and go through a process of prepping the seeds for use in over 100 different skin care, bath, body, soap, hair care, men's skin care and baby products.

Harvest Crush Syrah Wine Soap
Bernat Winery is owned by Sam and Shawnda Marmorstein, who also own the delicious Los Olivos Cafe and Wine Merchant (a must stop in Los Olivos!) You can find Grapeseed Co. products at The Los Olivos Wine Merchant, and in the lovely vacation rentals they have on their vineyard...

check out the gorgeous view! Plus a peek inside one of the vineyard cottages, where you will find this comfy bed looking out on the view above

...and the bathrooms stocked with Grapeseed Co. products!
Stacey and I having a little selfie fun in the mirror :)
It's pretty neat to see full circle, the source of the products right outside the window. This soap is literally made with the seeds from
the vineyard you are staying at.

How cool is that?!

Before and After --- Testing Out the Resroli Serum

My obsession with beauty products started when I was a young girl. I used to spend hours testing out the different fruity scents of products at the mall and I was ecstatic when I received gift packages of glittery bath and body items for my birthday. My collection of beauty products quickly expanded as I grew older and my medley of sparkly body lotions transformed into skin care essentials. Though I made it through most of my teenage years with very few breakouts, they unfortunately began during my freshman year of college. I was so desperate that I purchased new products every week in the hopes that they would help to clear up my skin. I would use an average of 7 different face washes, scrubs, moisturizers and spot treatments on a daily basis. Over the past 2 years I discovered that I was disrupting my skin even more by layering on too many diverse, chemically rich products. After this realization, I became more conscious of the ingredients that I was applying to my face and body.

I was beyond excited to join The Grapeseed Company as an intern this summer. After reading about their natural, antioxidant rich vinotherapy products that contain honest and local ingredients, I knew that the company fit in perfectly with my interests and lifestyle.

In order to get personally acquainted with the botanical beauty line, I decided to test out some of the skin care offerings on my own. Because of my problematic skin and acne scars, I am using the Resroli serum as my sole moisturizer. At first I was hesitant about applying an oil-based serum to my currently oily face; however, I have already seen an improvement in my skin tone and texture. I rub the Resroli serum onto my clean face both in the morning and at night. It absorbs quickly and truly leaves my face glowing. Additionally, it is nice to know that I am also helping to prevent future wrinkles and signs of aging because of the resveratrol and vitamins in the grapeseed oil, which is a prominent ingredient in the Resroli serum.

I took Before/After photos to document the changes in my skin. As you can see, I had some dark red scarring on my chin at the beginning of the summer. Although I now have a bit of a tan from the California sun, it is still quite obvious that the marks have dramatically lightened.

Before

After

I am so anxious to see the changes in my skin over the next few months... It is safe to say that I am completely hooked on the Resroli serum --- try it out for yourself and see if you get the amazing results that I did!

fresh from your kitchen: aloe + tea tree after-sun cooler

This past weekend was HOT in Santa Barbara and many other areas of our country! We embraced summer full force, surfing and hanging at the beach most of the weekend. It gave Pete and I lots of opportunities to put the new Cali Sun SPF 30 stick to the test! I've been product testing this for many months, but not yet in this intense summer sun and a full afternoon at the beach. As an avid water sport lover and sun stick user, I have to say this new product works wonders! I re-applied a few times throughout the day, and through the sun and waves it kept my face from burning (and as of Tuesday, no breakouts either!)

After a hot day in the sun, it's great to cool down and rehydrate. Try this fresh, cooling spritz on your skin in the hot weather... enjoy!

ingredients
8oz spray bottle
2 mint leaves
5 oz (weak) green tea
3 oz organic aloe juice
15 drops tea tree essential oil
15 drops lavender essential oil

directions
~brew a weak pot of green tea and let cool.
~add all ingredients to the bottle using a funnel.
~shake and chill in the fridge for a few hours before using. I also like to store this in the fridge to intensify the cooling effect when sprayed on the skin!
what it does...
green tea is rich in powerful polyphenol antioxidants. The caffeine in the green tea helps constrict pores and eliminate fluid waste and detox your skin.

aloe gently moisturizes, replenishes and calms the skin.

tea tree is naturally cooling. It has been referred to as the jack-of-all trades for problematic skin EOs... great for irritated skin including acne, insect bites, rashes, ring worm.

lavender has so many amazing properties: calming, antiseptic, antibacterial and has been know to help acne, scarring, winkles, burns, sunburns, eczema and psoriasis.

honey this sweet treat helps attract dirt, oil and clean skin with breakouts. Bees release a glucose enzyme when creating honey that is a natural antiseptic and has antibacterial properties. Do you sometimes look in the mirror and wonder how to make those tired eyes look ah-mazing without piling on tons of concealer or makeup? While nothing replaces a great night of sleep, there are a few tips and quick recipe you can whip up to combat under eye issues when you may not look (or feel) 100%
TEA for TWO Under Eye Relief
this may just be our simplest Fresh from your Kitchen recipe yet!

ingredients
2 organic green tea bags
boiling water

directions

ingredient spotlight: avocado

When I think AVOCADOS, I think LOCAL.
Did you know 95% of all avocados grown in the USA come from California?! Carpinteria, California is a laid back beach town just South of Santa Barbara, where we recently opened The Grapeseed Co. store #2 and warehouse. We have been loving it here for many reasons, including that it is chock full of avocado groves and happens to be home to the wonderful California Avocado Festival each fall! Avocados are an amazing fruit loaded with omegas and vitamins, native to our area. The Grapeseed Company incorporates local ingredients in all of our formulas, and one of our most recent additions to make your skin healthy and happy is the AVOCADO! Here's why it's great for your skin...
botanical name: (or how we are required by FDA to list "avocado"on the label)
Persea Gratissima oil
botanical benefits in skin care:
Avocados are a superfood that are sometimes known as "fruit with fat" because they're so meaty and moisturizing. Avocados are rich in omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin e which makes them an excellent anti~aging ingredient. Avocado oil easily penetrates and absorbs into the skin. It has a reputation of helping psoriasis and eczema, as well as acneic, mature and aging skin conditions... which means (like grapeseed oil) it's great for just about any skin type.

study links grapes to preventing sun damaged skin

I've written many times before about all of the amazing beauty benefits of grapes and grapeseeds. Recently, I've been reasearching more claims about the antioxidant rich fruit, including that it is a beneficial ingredient sun care and after sun products. The naturally occurring antioxidants in grapes may aid in preventing long term sun damage.

CosmeticDesign.com reported today on a study published in The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry on this very subject... check out what the team of scientists in Spain found out about the flavanoids in grapes and how the reduce damage in long term UVA and UVB exposed skin here.

Why Do Emulsions Need Preservatives?

In our current green focused marketplace, many consumers are looking for the most natural and organic personal care products they can find. Since opening The Grapeseed Co. flagship store last fall, I've become even more aware of the many misconceptions and misunderstanding consumers have around natural and organic products and the use of preservatives. Santa Barbara is a very consciously green community filled with people and businesses that are leaders in making policy change to support eco-friendly initiatives. I love this about Santa Barbara, but it also means we get very specific questions since our store attracts a lot of eco-conscious people who read ingredient labels before purchasing. They do not just buy a skin care product because it smells fabulous or feels wonderful! Our staff is constantly asked, "Why do you use preservatives in some of your products but not in others?" or "Why don't you use the 'natural' preservatives in everything you make?

Operating a retail store gives us the opportunity to interact and educate consumers face to face daily; I like to refer to these situations as "teachable moments". I very quickly realized we needed to train our staff to use these teachable moments to help clear up confusion and educate our consumers on using preservatives in botanical products and why they are so important to use in emulsion formulas.

Let's start with the basics... What exactly is an emulsion?
Emulsions are fairly simple to understand; they are formulas that combine water and oil. Preservatives must be used in any formula that contains water, juice (like aloe or local grape that we use) or a distillate (like green tea, white tea, lavender or chamomile) to ensure the formula is safe to apply to the skin and does not go rancid within a few weeks after being manufactured. Bacteria becomes a breading ground in emulsions. It grows when formulas that contain a water, juice or distillates and oils are mixed without the use of a preservative. Any emulsion formula like a lotion, shampoo or body wash needs a preservative to be stable and have a decent shelf life.

In most emulsion formulas, the preservative is a very small percentage of the overall formulation-- we're talking under 1% to 2% of the total formula. If you look at an ingredient deck, you will usually see the preservative listed as one of the last ingredients in the formula. Proper FDA labeling requires personal care product manufacturers to list the ingredients by the percentage they are used, with the exception of anything under 1% which does not need to be listed in the order of percentage of total formulation. For example, an ingredient that is 0.5% of the total formulation could be listed in the ingredient deck before an ingredient that is 0.8% of the total formulation. Any emulsion you see that does not use a preservative is much more dangerous to apply to your body than an emulsion that's been preserved properly and probably either has one of a few things going on:
~It has a very short shelf life (we're talking weeks to a few months)
~The manufacturer is not including the under 1% preservative being used in the ingredient deck, or listing it as something other than it's INCI name
~The product needs to be refrigerated

Products that are not properly preserved can lead to bacteria and fungus growth and other nasty stuff that (in my opinion) is much more dangerous than the 1% of preservative added to a natural or organic formula. Personal care product manufacturers are required by the FDA under GMP (good manufacturing practice) to test every batch they make for micro-organisms that can lead to bacteria, yeast, mold and fungus growth before bringing the product to market.

The only way to safely use natural preservatives (such as citric acid, rosemary oleoresin, vitamin E or certain essential oils like tea tree) and have a decent shelf life on a product is with a formula that has NO water, distillate or juice components. Many of our products that are not emulsions do not contain anything but natural preservatives since there is no juice or distillate in the formula, which explains why we use under 1% of synthetic preservatives in some products in our line and not in others.

feature ingredient: acai~ an ecologically sound antioxidant

Acai (INCI name: Euterpe Olerace) is a dark purplish hued berry that is native to South America. It's produced by a species of palm tree commonly found in Brazil. Acai is considered a superfruit due to its high antioxidant content, particularly for the flavanoids which help prevent oxidation caused by free radicals. Acai is touted for having even higher antioxidant content than many other superfruits like blueberries, blackberries, strawberries or cranberries. It's popping up in everything from drinks to energy bars to (you guessed it) skin care!

In addition to being rich in antioxidants, acai is an ecologically sound ingredient and renewable resource, much like the grape seed. Greenpeace states that harvesting acai berries is an "alternative to logging" and has produced multi-millions per year in revenue for the Amazon rainforest without chopping down trees.

I've been experimenting with acai in our formulations for a few years. It's a perfect compliment to our namesake grape seed to boost antioxidant levels even higher in formulations.

phthalates: are they safe?

Phthalates are a hot topic in personal care and many other industries. 60 Minutes ran a great segment last Sunday on the phthalates. Phthalates are found all around us in food, tap water, the air we breathe, plastics, household goods and many other products. The concern in personal care products centers around fragrance oils. They make fragrances linger longer and are found in many cosmetics and personal care products. It's a common misconception that all synthetic fragrances contain phthalates. In the past few years, many fragrance suppliers have moved to supplying only phthalate free fragrance oils. As the video will show you, the science on the safety of phthalates is still inconclusive. 60 Minutes did a great job reporting on both sides of the story, interviewing doctors, researchers and business. The clip below is definitely worth a watch, or you can check out the full segment and commentary here.

You won't find phthalates in any of our products. The Grapeseed Co. uses only essential oils, which are naturally steam distilled and extracted from fruits, plants and flowers to scent our products. We also have worked with many custom formulation and private label clients who do want to go the fragrance oil route, and we've created some fabulous (synthetic) fragrance oil custom scent blends using phthalate free fragrance oils.

Benefits of Red Wine for the Skin

Dr. Oz has a great article on his blog this morning called "Cheers To Red Wine". While many health professionals and media people like Barbara Walters have done features on the health benefits of red wine, I was particularly pleased to see Dr. Oz mention the great effects red wine and products made from grape seeds can have on the skin!

Dr. Oz says skin benefits come from "Polyphenols (that) protect the skin from UV light and keep it elastic. It also strengthens the cross-linking of collagen, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Studies also show that people who drink red wine have fewer cancerous skin lesions. If you cannot consume alcohol, you can get these same benefits from a grapeseed oil scrub made from the seeds/skins of red wine grapes."

You can checkout the full article on Dr. Oz's blog and read more about the skin benefits here. If you're interested in learning more about the health benefits of red wine and grape seeds, I highly recommend reading The Longevity Factor: How Resveratrol and Red Wine Activate Genes for a Longer and Healthier Life by Dr. Joseph Maroon. We also posted a series of videos about a year ago on health benefits of wine, here are the links to check them out.

I want to give a quick shout out to a twitter friend and customer who sent me this link today; thanks @erinstoupe for thinking of me! I know how I'm planning on unwinding this evening, a nice glass of Santa Barbara syrah and maybe even a custom vinotherapy mask to go along with it.... Have a fabulous Friday!
