Summer Sun Care for Grapeseeders on the Go! SPF SUN STICK + BALM

Long, light days and a blazing sun means it's the perfect time for new adventures or some much-deserved R&R. Wherever the heat takes you The Grapeseed Co.'s SPF Summer sun care products will keep you pampered and protected!

In the mountains

I am loving the new SPF 30 Cali Sun Stick for my mountaintop hikes. The small, compact and no mess tube makes it easy to carry along. It takes only seconds to rub all over my face and ears with no danger of that common and awkward "not fully rubbed in" sunscreen debacle. But by far the best part about the stick is that it is formulated with natural cocoa butter, coconut and preserved with rosemary oleoresin so my skin stays moisturized and breakout free!
  On the beach

When I need some relaxation, I head straight to the beach for hours on hours of bronzing and boogie boarding, and it’s easy to forget to include my lips in my sun-protection process. But with The Grapeseed Co.’s SPF 15 natural based lip balms I've been dying to pucker up. The rich blend of organic coconut, olive and hemp oils leaves my lips moisturized, soft, and oh-so kissable! My favorite for summer is the island-inspired Coconut flavor, but the nutty Almond Cream smells just as sweet!

Take Grapeseed Co. Sun Care along for your own Summer fun!

All of these SPF products are available online HERE or stop by our Santa Barbara or Carpinteria store.

Featured Retailer: Integral Therapy Center

Just in time for Valentine's.... Here's a holistic therapy center you'll surely fall in LOVE with- Integral Therapy Center of Roscoe, IL.  This "feel good" co-op offers a cutting edge approach to holistic medicine by integrating ancient mind-body wisdom with the latest research and therapies. They provide a unique and multi-disciplinary approach to total wellness by offering services in yoga, pilates, massage, skin therapy and more. Integral Therapy Center has been wholesale partners with The Grapeseed Company for many years. This month we shed light on esthetician, Melissa Weidman, who shares more about The Spa at Integral Therapy Center.
Tell us about your spa?
The Spa at Integral Therapy Center offers massage, facials, back facials, face and body waxing, ear candling, and spa parties. We pride ourselves on using products with clean and safe ingredients. As an esthetician I am really trying to spread the knowledge to our guests about safe and effective ways that we can care for our skin with ingredients we already have at home and clean, responsible product line like The Grapeseed Co

What makes your spa unique/different?
The spa itself is only part of what I like to explain as a holistic therapy co-op. Other services offered throughout the building are Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, Yoga, Pilates, Meditation groups and we also have a therapy dog. It's a beautiful space where you can find some peace and so many ways to care for yourself and being part of that is what makes it so unique.
How have you taken initiative to become a greener business?
The newest for us has been connecting with a local farm that is part of the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) network. We will be a pick-up site for them starting this coming spring and we will be offering more information on the importance of supporting local organic farms and the difference they make. Other ways we try to be green are finding used furniture to furnish our space instead of buying new. I personally have found many uses for my empty Grapeseed Co. containers. The eye cream dishes work great for carrying jewelry when traveling, empty candle jars are perfect for holding waxing sticks, ear candles or cotton pads and if I refill any of the bottles with a pump on the top my kids prefer them over other toys in the tub! If I can't find a use for it, I recycle it.
What is your best selling Grapeseed product?
The Grapeseed Oil is the best seller. It has so many wonderful uses, it's hard not to love it!

What is your personal favorite Grapeseed product?
My own favorite is the Rose and Grape Serum. I love it on it's own or a few drop of it in my moisturizer.

We could all use a little R & R around the holidays...
The Grapeseed Company has a great idea on how to do this!  Book yourself an appointment at Vino+Therapy StudioThis spa is a real treat for wine lovers! Ahhhh....
Patty (Kristin's mom) and Nena (owner, Vino + Therapy Studio)

We are happy to end this year by featuring one of our fabulous wholesale partners,
Vino + Therapy Studio in Atascadero, CA.  They not only sell products from The Grapeseed Company in their retail boutique, but also use our products in their spa treatments.  Owner Nena Benson gives us the scoop on this fun & luxurious spa.

1.  Tell us about your Spa?
As the only full service wine therapy day spa on the Central Coast, we’ve tried to provide a wide selection of services that exhibit the healing and rejuvenating properties of wine used during the beautification process. Our services range from the simple to extravagant and are meant to accommodate a wide range of needs and wants. As we like to say, " Come Get Pampered by the Vine, While drinking dam fine local wines!"

2. What makes your Spa unique/different?
We are positive you’ve never seen a Day Spa quite like this on the Central Coast before – we guarantee it! Check out all that we have to offer the wine enthusiast who also loves to be pampered. We are bringing Italy here but at a fraction of the costs:)
 3. How have you taken initiative to become a greener business?
As some of you may know, Wine therapy, also referred to as Vinotherapie or Vinoterapia in Italian, has received much attention in Tuscany and other European Countries. Bringing this concept to the Western U.S. is new. When applied topically, studies have proven extensive benefits. These Grape seeds, stems and skins  (which is what the wine makers throw away) all contain high quantities of powerful antioxidants, minerals, pectic, sugars, tannins and vitamins that are fundamental to the skin’s well being. We only use products that are organic & has the byproduct of wine making. One of our favorite lines is the Grapeseed Company! Our signature wine foot soaks are created with corked wine, and whatever extra herbs that are in season. We use organic cleansers while cleaning the spa.

4. What is your best selling Grapeseed product?
The Vino Gel cleanser & The Serums! TRY THEM & YOU WILL FIND OUT WHY!!!! Amazing......

 Kristin and Anna (Kristin's sister)
This is a fabulous wine therapy treatment, all the way around and
a wonderful place to bring loved ones. We'll be back!
~ Kristin Fraser Cotte ~ Founder + CEO The Grapeseed Company

5. What is your personal favorite Grapeseed product?
I love love love the Grapeseed Serums! It's a must in my life & it should be in your too! Being a medical Aestitcian, I have used many products. Some natural & some not so much. This serum is a keeper for preventive aging & dehydration of the skin.

Our focus on artisan, handcrafted “well-kept-secret” products is unique among online bath and body products retailers. We proudly bring visibility to companies, whose products are known primarily within their local / regional market areas.
From a customer standpoint, this means access to unique products they might not otherwise know about, with the convenience of shopping at one website. In addition to product variety, customers benefit from easier product comparison and lower shipping costs vs. purchasing from many separate websites.
We hand package every order with care, honoring the artisan quality of the products within. Each order comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

We choose to work with companies whose practices and philosophies are environmentally aware. In general, their product ingredients and packaging are much simpler and greener than national brands. We routinely use recycled bags and packaging for our orders.
4. What is your best selling Grapeseed product?
The Chamomile Grapefruit Facial Moisturizer gets great reviews, and has become a customer favorite!

An important life lesson through entrepreneurship

Happy. Refreshed. Renewed.... ready to roll and tackle the world!
These are just a few feelings I've been pleasantly and unexpectedly overcome with in the past week. Entrepreneurship aint as grand as many perceive sometimes... it's super tough. It pushes you to limits you never imagined. It beats you down, but ultimately makes you stronger. It involves an extreme amount of risk, trust, and positive thinking, even when you want to crawl under the covers and never come out. To be honest, I was in this place a few weeks ago. After a tough bought of working around the clock for a few months to open another store, hiring an employee who was toxic to our business, going through a rough firing, and having another key employee dramatically resign without any notice, I was totally beaten down. We'd just opened our second store and I did not even have enough staff to keep both up and running!

I had quite a few mornings where I did not want to come out from under the covers. I almost canceled the first "real vacation" I've taken in 2 years because I didn't know how I'd possibly keep my business going and leave California. After a momentary lapse of feeling totally screwed, sorry for myself and in shock, I got out of bed and dealt with it. Some amazing friends and family were my first line of defense; they helped pull me through this tough time by covering shifts at the stores, sending me positive messages, giving advice and lifting my spirits. They reminded me of all I had accomplished and helped push me out of the dark place I was in. Once I was ready to address things, I turned to my entrepreneurial support systems. My advisers had my back; they sympathized with my situation, recounting their own journeys along the way. I even had the fortunate chance to speak with a few in person on this East coast trip. My business coach, Melody Stevens of Time Millionaire, was on the phone within an hour of sending a "holy sh*t, what do I do?!" email. She helped me come up with a plan to get on that plane, refine my systems, train and trust my new team so that I could get away and spend time with my family. My Savor the Success sisters listened on a mastermind call and gave ideas and inspiration. I realized I could leave The Grapeseed Co., that not everyone was out to screw me, and what I needed more than anything was to take that vacation! I am truly grateful to have all of these brilliant minds collaborating, because no matter how strong you think you are, you cannot do it alone. One of my sister-in-law's favorite sayings is, "it takes a village..." These people help make up my village and I am grateful for their support.
Her other favorite saying is, "we're so blessed" which I truly feel right now. I've spent the past week on my parents catamaran sailing the Maine coast with my husband, mom, dad, their cuddly dog Jorbi, and my dad's old friend from graduate school he recently reconnected with after multiple decades. We've sailed to a different port with a gorgeous, unique lighthouse every night, seen amazing natural beauty, ate delicious meals, laughed and recounted what it was like when Pete and I lived the simple life aboard a sailboat! On one of our stops along the way, I reconnected with a wonderful friend from grad school I had not seen in over 5 years and met her new husband. Seeing her so happy in such a beautiful place with a great partner brought me joy. There are those people you can go years without speaking to, then when you get together it's like you haven't missed a beat! It's fun that my dad and I both had the chance to experience this in the past week.
Given the situation with Grapeseed, this could not be an "unplugged" vacation, so I've been working remotely a few hours each day while my new and improved team has handled the stores, shipping orders and manufacturing beautifully in my absence.  It's been reassuring to see we have developed solid systems, and can find competent help to step in and take over if needed. I even took a bit of time to chat on the phone and advise another entrepreneur friend who is on the cusp of something great, which felt nice to be helpful. I've read books for pleasure (not business) and taken moments to nap, stare at the sea and do nothing at all but smile. These are the important things in life that bring true happiness; not fretting or feeling sorry for the current pickle you happen to be in.

So many times, we don't "live out loud" when times get tough. We don't ask for the support we need or tell people what we are going through. It's easy to share our success stories, our victories, our accomplishments, but difficult to mention the extreme emotional drain and hardships along the way. As we wrap up this trip, my biggest take away is to take time to treasure the simple but important things in life, even when you think you can't or don't have time to. I haven't spent a full week of 24/7 with my parents in a while and have realized it's really fun and I need to do it more often! Crap is going to happen; that's life. There are so many things that are beyond your control, but mindset is something we all have complete control over. I'm heading back to California with the best possible gifts I could receive right now, empowerment, great new ideas, and a renewed sense of spirit. Sometimes it's the tough stuff teaches you the most!

fresh from your kitchen: breathe relief rub

I don't know about you, but I always get sick when I finally get time off. I may have overbooked a bit the last few months of 2010. Being new to the whole retail scene during the holiday season, I knew traveling to visit family in Boston was out of the question this year with our new store... so I had the brilliant idea to host both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our families were up for it and traveled from the East coast to be with us in Santa Barbara, which was wonderful. What was not so wonderful was the killer cold that set in the first minute I sat down, stopped working and relaxed. I collapsed on the couch, sinus pressure set in followed by the usual suspects: a hacking cough, mild fever, congestion and overall feeling like crap. Luckily, my husband ran down to The Grapeseed Co. store and grabbed some essential oils for me to work some cold relief magic with. I whipped up my standby cold care steam recipe I've shared with you before, and made a batch of my special breathe relief rub to kick that cold to the curb.

Breathe Relief Rub
Remember that petroleum based Vick's Vapo Rub mom rubbed on your chest as a kid? I make a natural version with 3 simple ingredients:
2 oz 100% pure grapeseed oil (our travel size bottle is perfect to mix essential oils in and easily fits in a bag or purse to take with you and reapply as necessary)
15 drops eucalyptus EO
10 drops peppermint EO

directions:
Unscrew the lid to your travel grapeseed oil bottle. Carefully add the essential oils.
Cap the bottle and shake vigorously.
Apply as needed to your chest and breathe deep.

how it works:
Grapeseed oil is a perfect choice for all skin types and absorbs quickly into the skin, carrying the essential oil (EO) mixture with it. Eucalyptus and peppermint oils are known to help clear the respiratory system and ease breathing.

All ingredients are available by clicking on the links in the recipe above.  My resolution in 2011 is to slow down a bit, rest more and take better care of myself so I don't get sick!

Stay healthy :)

The Safe Cosmetic Act of 2010 is Not the Solution

I'm taking a moment to update you all on new proposed cosmetic legislation that will ultimately impact everyone, from large cosmetic companies, to small, green indie manufacturers (like me), to anyone who sells personal care products and cosmetics, to you, the consumer.

H.R 5786 the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 was released yesterday. I've had a chance to read through the document multiple times and have huge concerns and questions with the bill as drafted. The entire bill can be downloaded by clicking the link above. In attempt to share my personal experience and not turn this post into a novel, I'm directing you to check out these posts that summarize and highlight just some of the many issues with the Safe Cosmetic Act of 2010 draft. I urge you to read the bill as well.

Interestingly enough, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics (CFSC) released The Story Of Cosmetics, a “shockumentary” on cosmetic safety on the very same day this proposed new legislation was released...

This was no coincidence.

It's time to tell my own personal story, something I have been a bit hesitant to do on Green Skincare Blog up until this point. An important note to all those who support CFSC and the new bill, the signers of the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics Compact were not notified in any way shape or form as to the lobbying and orchestrated release of the CFSC video with the proposed legislation draft.

I know this first hand because my company is still listed as a Compact Signer... even though I have asked multiple times to be removed due to the detrimental direction the Campaign was heading in squashing small businesses, along with the lack of science behind their agenda. I last attended an annual compact meeting at Expo West in March 2009 where I was threatened if I did not update my products in the Skin Deep system, my company would be removed as a Compact Signer. That was 17 months ago. I have not updated my products in their system, and have not been removed from the Compact. I have chosen to register with the FDA Voluntary Cosmetic Registration Program (VCRP) and have always listed our complete ingredient decks on TheGrapeseedCompany.com. I have sent multiple emails asking to be removed from CFSC completely, the latest sent just last week.

I still have not been removed as a Campaign For Safe Cosmetics Compact Signer.

Lisa Rodgers, my co-founding partner at PersonalCareTruth.com and I have directly tried to work with the CFSC. After the proposed Colorado Cosmetic Bill failed, the co-founder of CFSC left multiple comments right here at Green Skincare Blog. Following our online interaction, Lisa and I had a conference call with Stacy Malkan, co-founder of the CFSC, about our concerns with the Campaign and lobbying for legislation that would hurt the small, innovative, natural companies. Stacy commented during our conversation, and in writing on my blog that her "view on Skin Deep is that it is not a perfect system and never can be, because of what it is trying to do -- analyze an entire industry based on available data, which is very limited due to the historic lack of safety regulations for chemicals."

I am still perplexed by the fact that co-founder of CFSC herself is pointing out flaws with the Skin Deep rating system CFSC Compact Signers are required to register their formulas in! I do not want my business associated with an organization lobbying to put me out of business based on fear mongering and lack of science. I support safe cosmetics based on scientific research. CFSC has not shown the science to back their rating system in Skin Deep.  The way this bill is written would impose huge fees on companies big and small which we will all end up seeing when we purchase our daily essentials, from soap to mascara.

So while CFSC is touting support for this bill from their Compact Signers, I must ask:
  • How many other companies are there out there like me who have asked to be removed and the CFSC has not complied?
  • Why haven't they complied? (I think I know the answer to this one... but what do you think?)
  •  How many of the companies on their signer list have gone out of business and are still listed as compact signers?
  •  How many are just plain scared to be removed due to the obvious power this “nonprofit” currently has over our government and pending legislation? (if you’re wondering why that’s in quotes, read The Revealing Truth of the Money Trail of EWG)
We all want to make sure the personal care products we use are safe, but do we want our government to create a paperwork nightmare that regulates down to nanoparticles when we don't have the science (ironically from the words of Susan Roll, a founding member of CFSC) to back it? You can listen to Ms. Roll's live statement from the Colorado hearing by clicking the link above. There may be room for improvement in FDA regulations concerning cosmetics, but The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 in it's current form is is not the solution.

I urge you all to voice your opinion and oppose The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 in it's current draft. If you're interested in learning more about the science behind what's in your skin care products, visit Personal Care Truth.

This bill will not ensure your body is safer.

It will make the price tag on your personal care and cosmetic products much higher.

It will squash small businesses paving the way in innovation and green cosmetics right out of the industry.

We need to be vocal, not scared. We need to tell our stories. We need to stand up to the CFSC and make sure they are not using our businesses as "numbers" to show support of this bill. You may feel the impact in your wallets if you don't. No matter how green you consider yourself, we all use personal care products daily. This bill will impact everyone.

Perhaps this post will finally get me removed from the CFSC Compact Signers list?

As I step off my soap box, I have one last thought that has been lingering in the back of my mind for months... why is the government targeting the cosmetic industry? We have a proven track record of safety. What you apply to your body doesn't affect your system in the same way as what you put into your body... if we're concerned about health issues, cancer and safety, shouldn't we be scrutinizing diet, fitness and lifestyle choices... things that are actually scientifically proven to affect health? We have no legislation in place to cover what we eat or our lifestyle choices... why is the target pointed at the cosmetics industry?

beauty foods: grilled salmon on lemon lentils & arugula

Beauty Foods are delicious, nutrient rich recipes to eat your way to healthy skin. Beauty Foods is a spin off on Fresh From Your Kitchen, bringing you the same format from our delectable DIY spa recipes to delicious food recipes that will lead to glowing, healthy skin from the inside out!

This delicious, easy recipe incorporates 2 of my favorite foods that are staples on our shopping list, salmon and arugula. They just happen to be full of rich antioxidants and vitamins for healthy skin too!

ingredients ~ serves 2
3/4 to 1 lb salmon cut into 2 fillets
1/2 cup dry lentils or 1/2 can cooked lentils
1 bunch arugula, rinsed and torn
2 T red wine vinegar
2T chopped onion
2t dijon mustard
1 lemon (for zest and juice)
olive oil
S&P

simple steps
Rub salmon with olive oil, S&P and grill.

Cook the lentils as directed if using dry lentils. If using canned lentils, zap them in the microwave to heat 45 seconds to 1 min.

Make the salad dressing: combine vinegar, 2T olive oil, mustard & onion. Add lemon zest, S&P to taste. Toss warm lentils and arugula in vinaigrette. Spread on plate. Place grilled salmon on top and garnish with lemon wedge. Enjoy!

Why it's healthy for your skin and body

Salmon is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which does wonders for your skin, not to mention your heart and are known as an anti-inflammatory. Try to select wild salmon, the pinker the better. Some farm raised salmon add color, so do not be fooled by this. Alaskan, sockeye and coho salmon are usually good bets if they are available. These are said to contain the highest amounts of essential fatty acids.

Lentils are a great dried bean to get started with, because they cook much quicker than other dried beans. They are high in iron, fiber, B vitamins and minerals. There have been medical studies that show benefits of consuming lentils for heart health. You can read more about it here.

Arugula, along with many other dark greens, is rich in vitamin A & C, magnesium, folic acid, calcium and phytochemicals, which are a great antioxidant source. These help detoxify the body and skin. The delicious peppery taste is a welcome surprise, giving a much different flavor than other leafy greens. We grow arugula in our urban garden because I love it so much. It's also an easy staple to pick up at your local farmer's market.

phthalates: are they safe?

Phthalates are a hot topic in personal care and many other industries. 60 Minutes ran a great segment last Sunday on the phthalates. Phthalates are found all around us in food, tap water, the air we breathe, plastics, household goods and many other products. The concern in personal care products centers around fragrance oils. They make fragrances linger longer and are found in many cosmetics and personal care products. It's a common misconception that all synthetic fragrances contain phthalates. In the past few years, many fragrance suppliers have moved to supplying only phthalate free fragrance oils. As the video will show you, the science on the safety of phthalates is still inconclusive. 60 Minutes did a great job reporting on both sides of the story, interviewing doctors, researchers and business. The clip below is definitely worth a watch, or you can check out the full segment and commentary here.

You won't find phthalates in any of our products. The Grapeseed Co. uses only essential oils, which are naturally steam distilled and extracted from fruits, plants and flowers to scent our products. We also have worked with many custom formulation and private label clients who do want to go the fragrance oil route, and we've created some fabulous (synthetic) fragrance oil custom scent blends using phthalate free fragrance oils.

Benefits of Red Wine for the Skin

Dr. Oz has a great article on his blog this morning called "Cheers To Red Wine". While many health professionals and media people like Barbara Walters have done features on the health benefits of red wine, I was particularly pleased to see Dr. Oz mention the great effects red wine and products made from grape seeds can have on the skin!

Dr. Oz says skin benefits come from "Polyphenols (that) protect the skin from UV light and keep it elastic. It also strengthens the cross-linking of collagen, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Studies also show that people who drink red wine have fewer cancerous skin lesions. If you cannot consume alcohol, you can get these same benefits from a grapeseed oil scrub made from the seeds/skins of red wine grapes."

You can checkout the full article on Dr. Oz's blog and read more about the skin benefits here. I want to give a quick shout out to a twitter friend and customer who sent me this link today; thanks @erinstoupe for thinking of me! I know how I'm planning on unwinding this evening, a nice glass of Santa Barbara syrah and maybe even a custom vinotherapy mask to go along with it.... Have a fabulous Friday!

PersonalCareTruth.com is here!

Good Morning,

I  just launched a new website! My latest venture has been a labor of love and ultimately frustration with the crazy misinformation out there about what is safe in cosmetics and personal care products.

My good friend Lisa Rodgers, creator extraordinaire of Cactus and Ivy, and I have been collaborating for months on this massive project. Lisa contacted me one morning with an idea based on a dream. I could not have asked for a more solid partner to cofound the site with! Lisa shares my work ethic, passion, and need to spread the truth, based on scientific research when it comes to beauty products.

I invite you all to spend some time at Personal Care Truth. This site was founded by beauty industry insiders, but meant for YOU ~ everyone and anyone who is concerned about what they are putting on their skin. Personal Care Truth is not about scare tactics, generalizations, fear mongering, or hopping aboard what’s considered trendy at the moment. Personal Care Truth is about education, facts, questions, research, sharing knowledge, and empowering consumers to make the choice that’s right for their families. We believe it is more powerful to provide information to educate and empower YOU as opposed to scaring you with information that has not been backed by science.

Welcome to Personal Care Truth ; come meet and learn from our well researched contributors. World renowned experts share their knowledge and research in the industry.

One more person I must give a shout out to is Jennifer Smith of Eco Office Gals. Thank you so much for helping us build the site and being the wonderful, entertaining person you are. We could not have done this without you.

Have a fabulous Monday, and let us know what you think about PersonalCareTruth.com

cheers,
