We've Moved! Vist our New Store in the Funk Zone & now Open Daily in Carpinteria

I am beyond happy to announce that we are fully moved in to our new shop in the Funk Zone at The Waterline, 120 Santa Barbara Street!
The Waterline • 120 Santa Barbara St. Santa Barbara, CA
This is a super fun new location where you can sip, shop, eat and hang at Topa Topa and Lama Dog breweries, Fox Wine Co., and the Nook restaurant along with other great shops! We are psyched for this new chapter for The Grapeseed Co. in Santa Barbara.
New Shop at The Waterline • 21 W. Ortega St. SB
The downtown Ortega St. location is now closed, and our office has moved the Carp Store and Warehouse on 4193 Carpinteria Ave #6. We are excited to be open daily, later hours, and Sundays for your convenience, and to be surrounded by such cool and complementary businesses in both locations!

This sweet lemonade was made from a big fat lemon of a situation...

2017 ended with the largest wildfire in CA history, the Thomas Fire, ripping through our normally idyllic seaside towns, followed by the tragic Montecito mudslides causing loss and devastation beyond imagination at the start of the new year. This also cut off access between our two locations, and was one of the most challenging times in the history of our 14 year old company! Like everyone in the area, we are still recovering from it. We were nowhere near prepared for the next round of crazy that hit Grapeseed Co. in April.
Ortega St. Scent Bar (after-left, before-right)
Part of the charm of our downtown Santa Barbara flagship store was the old brick building that houses some great businesses on Ortega Street, starting with The Grapeseed Co. The extreme weather has been taking a toll on our corner of the large, old building. On April 9th, our Scent Bar came crashing down out of nowhere! 5 years mounted firm to the wall, and BOOM! Over $5K of glass essential oil bottles hit the floor.

The wall that starts the whole building The Grapeseed Co. occupied on Ortega had expanded and blistered, popping the shelves off the wall.
21 W. Ortega Street • wall blister
Why did this happen? After the last evacuation rain, we had a 90+ degree day... The roof had been leaking all winter, and that water had been dripping down into our wall, causing a wet sponge effect. When the extreme heat hit, the wall expanded and shifted.

We were super lucky no one was hurt; we had 25 kids in there less than 24 hours before for a scent bar party! We became quickly aware as experts checked out the situation that it was no longer safe for The Grapeseed Co. to occupy 21 W. Ortega Street and continue to run business as usual. We had to move.

So, in just a month we secured a new storage warehouse in Carpinteria and moved tens of thousands of bottles and jars out of our current warehouse. With the new found space, we built out a scent bar, opened up the storefront and made it larger, and reconfigured our production lab and shipping areas. We turned my creative loft space into the office for our entire team. This kept us functioning, orders shipping, and business running seemingly as usual while we figured out what the heck to do!

Our main store has always been Santa Barbara based, so we decided the best thing to do was expand in the Funk Zone. A few weeks before the fire hit, we opened a tiny shop at The Guilded Table as an "experiment" for the holidays... clearly Mother Nature did not agree with my holiday sales plan! But the space has amazing potential, and I'm hopeful for what our "normal" Santa Barbara sunny summer days will bring. We've been working around the clock the past week building out the new Funk Zone shop. We can't wait to share it with you, host incredible Scent Bar parties there, blend up your favorite creative scent concoctions and just be surrounded by great people, businesses, food + drink, bubbling ideas and more.
Scent Bar in the Funk Zone • 120 Santa Barbara St.
Please come visit us soon! The Waterline building is located right behind Michael Kate Interiors and opens at noon daily. There's parking at the end of the street. It's a fun place for all ages to hang, and dogs are welcome, too.

2018 has been a whirlwind in business survival, a lesson in resilience, strength and the endless learning that goes along with entrepreneurship. That which does not kill us makes us stronger... The Grapeseed Co. is standing strong, just a mile away from our sweet memories on Ortega Street.

Please help us spread the word about the move! we're looking forward to sharing the new stores with you, seeing your smiling faces and continuing to thrive, no matter what life continues to surprise us with.

Cheers to good things ahead, always keeping your chin up and persevering!

~ Kristin

We'll bring the shop to you!

The Grapeseed Company introduced at-home parties this holiday season (check out our blog post here), and we also began "at-business" parties too...
 (photo taken at Summerland Winery)

We were recently welcomed by local tasting rooms Au Bon Climat and Summerland Winery, where we did mini spa treatments and sampled out various items from our skin care line.  Customers and staff members were educated on organic skin care and the benefits of grapeseeds.  These promos also make it possible to purchase The Grapeseed Company products on site, as we are equipped with inventory and a satellite register.

This is a great event for businesses as it draws people in for a "spa night."  Customers enjoy products from The Grapeseed Company and products from the hosting business! It's a fun and social way to shop for the holiday season!

If your business is interested in having an event with The Grapeseed Company, contact us for more information.

Featured Retailer: Los Olivos General Store

This month we're proudly featuring Los Olivos General Store.  If you head to the Santa Ynez Valley to wine taste, you must stop by this adorable shop in the heart of downtown Los Olivos.  We caught up with owner, Christina Larner, to learn more about her business.

1. Tell us a bit about Los Olivos General Store...
Our store is located in the center of Los Olivos in a historic building that was built as a gas station in 1901. Our theme is “wine-art-home” and great effort is made to source locally produced items that celebrate the lifestyle of the Santa Ynez Valley. We carry a variety of unique gifts, home décor, jewelry, books, handbags, scarves, wine accessories, gourmet foods, olive oil, skin care products, garden goods and barrel stave furniture.
2. What makes your store unique/different?
We are also an art gallery. We feature paintings by local artists and rotate the exhibits every quarter. Currently we are exhibiting the art of Santa Barbara painter Jeremy Harper. He paints local landscapes and his work is striking.

3. How have you taken initiative to become a greener business?
We always strive to be a 'greener' business. We carry local products which help support local farmers and artisans. Many of our products are re-purposed such as a variety of items made from wine barrels and wine bottles- from lighting to drink ware. We also use 100% recycled paper bags and packaging.
4. What is your best selling Grapeseed product?
The Summer Crisp Chardonnay Wine Bar Soap is our best selling product from The Grapeseed Company. In fact, all of the wine bar soaps are popular. Our customers love that the soap is made with wine, the fragrance is delightful, and the packaging makes it a great gift!

5.  What is your personal favorite Grapeseed product?
My personal favorite product is Sweet Lips. I use it every night before bed. It is so moisturizing and I never have chapped lips!

How to reach them:

heard it through the grapevine . . . The Grapeseed Co. is opening STORE #2

We are giddy with excitement (and maybe lack of sleep) about opening our second brick and mortar location in Carpinteria, California! A little less than 2 years ago, we opened our flagship store in downtown Santa Barbara...
You may remember this time, it was the summer of 2010 and the economy was tough (to say the least.) Brick & mortar stores were closing left and right, especially in downtown SB. I listened to countless people (from my nearest and dearest to total strangers) tell me I was crazy, I was making a mistake and I would fail. I'll be totally honest; I got really bummed out at times. I even broke down and cried on a few occasions because I was so sick of hearing "why on earth did you open a retail store?" or "good luck" with a sarcastic tone daily from some random person off the street. After a few months I bucked up, developed some thick(er) skin and pushed full speed ahead with my entrepreneurial headlights beaming. What's that saying about what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger?

I'm happy to say 22 months later the SB store is proving those passer-by's wrong and we are weeks away from opening our second store in the adorable beach town of Carpinteria, CA!

We have a new warehouse space on the beach side of Carpinteria Ave. right before you hit downtown. It's a pleasant spot with some great neighboring businesses like Chocolats du Cali Bressan, Carpinteria Wine Co. and Upright Paddle Sports. We moved our production to Carp in April and have increased our manufacturing capabilities in the new, much larger space.

We are thrilled to be in a spot where we can build-out a second store as well! It's in the works, but I'll give you a peek inside. Here's what we moved into...
First order of business was getting the production kitchen up and running so we could continue to fill orders. The new space has allowed us to up our manufacturing capabilities big time! Here's what we can now produce in a day...
We've been able to turn around much larger wholesale orders, and are so excited that Grapeseed goodness is reaching many more of you around the globe!
We're smack in the midst of the build-out, but have designed a great set up where you will be able to watch us creating grapeseed goodies through these large french doors that join the store to our manufacturing area.
Those of you that have visited our SB store know that we love to show our creative side through store design. We're bringing that same love to the new Carpinteria store, and are spending this weekend refinishing upcycled furniture and building displays in our own green, grapeseed style.
We hope you'll stop by and visit in June... you can find us by these great lime green chairs that will be outside 4193 Carpinteria Ave #9!

Remember, don't let the turkeys get ya down. Amazing things can happen when you stay true to your roots, take risk and truly believe in success. Everything else is a good learning experience; it's all in how you look at things!

xoxo,

Holiday Decor Grapeseed Style: DIY Grapevine Jingle Wreath

The store does not have the floor space for a proper tree this year, but we had a fun time coming up with other ways to decorate this holiday season! We created two beautiful wreaths for The Grapeseed Co. boutique today. First, I'll share directions for our Grapevine Jingle Wreath, created with upcycled grapevines, festive bells and a splash of creativity!

Grapevine Jingle Wreath
 You'll need:
bells (we used 2 different sizes)
a wire wreath frame
dried grapevines
decorative berries or beads
clear fishing line
scissors
DIY INSTRUCTIONS
~Wrap the grapevines around the wreath frame, weaving in and out for your desired shape and size. I worked on bending ours until it framed the Grapeseed Co. logo on our door perfectly. You can also buy a pre-made wreath created from dried grapevines at a craft store like Michael's.
~String the fishing line through each bell and attach in randomly spaced spots around the wreath.
~wrap the berries around the vines, filling in spots that look bare after adding the bells.
~Hang and enjoy! We love this on our entry door because it jingles every time a customer comes in!

Next week I'll share instructions for wreath #2....
Lucinda turned a traditional green wreath into a 2-sided window display that looks beautiful outside the window and inside the shop!
