This has been a huge attraction to our shop, and we love sniffing your amazing custom scent blends. We also love hearing the stories of who you gift these to, and why you love to create and name the gift! Our new location in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara (across from Macy's at 21 W. Ortega Street) has a gorgeous new expanded scent bar and lounge!

fresh from your kitchen: coco~banana deep conditioner

This moisturizing, nourishing pre-shampoo deep conditioning hair treatment is great for dry, damaged hair. I try to do it every couple of weeks to combat the salt and sun my hair is exposed to by surfing.

coco~banana 
deep conditioner

1/2 a ripe banana
1/4-1/3 cup coconut oil
(depending on hair length- go 1/3c if your hair is super long & thick)
1T shea butter
12-20 drops Essential Oil (EO) or scent of your choice

Essential Oil Recommendations
Rosemary EO:
clarifying
Lemon EO:
brightening for blonds
Lavender & Geranium EOs:
moisturizing
or 
just give it a tropical, yummy scent with phthalate free coconut creme fragrance oil

Directions:
Mash the banana or puree in a blender or food processor.
Gently melt the coconut oil in the microwave in 45 sec bursts. When it's almost all liquid, remove and stir in the shea butter.
Add to pureed banana and whip.
Let cool for 10-15 min before applying to dry hair.
When mixture is warm to touch but still liquid, apply to your hair from scalp to ends of strands.
Wrap hair in shower cap or plastic wrap for up to 20 min.
Wash and rinse thoroughly.

Today's Fresh From Your Kitchen brings you quick hair brightening rinses for both blonds and brunettes to help add shine, brighten and clarify your mane.

Brighten and shine blond locks by applying this hair rinse after shampooing
1 cup chamomile tea, or a handful of chamomile flowers steeped in 1 cup water and strained
1 lemon, juiced
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar

 and for brunettes
1 cup green or black tea
15 drops rosemary essential oil (you can also brew a handful of fresh rosemary in with the tea and strain)
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar


directions:
Mix ingredients together in an easy to pour large measuring cup (like a pyrex) and apply rinse to wet hair after washing. Massage into scalp. rinse after 10 min. Apply additional conditioner if needed.

what it does:
Apple cider vinegar helps to remove build up and clarify hair, as well as balance the ph. Rinsing with apple cider vinegar helps to smooth the hair shaft, which helps reflect light and make hair shiny.

Rosemary is known as a natural hair conditioner and helps to bring out highlights in dark hair. It also is a natural remedy for dandruff.

Chamomile and lemon are natural lighteners and brighteners for blond hair and a great alternative for blondies who want highlights without the bleach. Results are much more subtle than bleach and take multiple uses to achieve. Sun intensifies the results, but be careful not to burn your scalp!

Green Skin Care: Fresh from Your Kitchen

B.C.C. Hair Mask
(BCC = Brighten, Clarify & Condition)

1 T coconut oil
1 t grape seed oil

mix next few ingredients based on your hair tone
light tones:
1/2 t lemon juice
10 drops lemon or grapefruit essential oil

dark tones:
10 drops rosemary essential oil

Directions:
melt coconut oil in glass pyrex in the microwave
Add grapeseed oil and essential oils to mixture and blend

Application:
Apply to warm, damp hair while oils are still warm
Put on a shower cap or wrap saran wrap over hair, and a warm towel turban
try heating towel in the dryer for a few minutes while you make and apply the conditioning mask
Kick back and relax for 10-20 min.
Wash, condition and style hair

What it Does:
Coconut oil is rich in essential fatty acids that help revive and replenish stressed tresses. It has a wonderful conditioning effect of the hair when used as a hot oil treatment. Grapeseed oil is rich in vitamin E and polyphenols. It is light and moisturizing on the hair shaft while depositing antioxidants to the surface of the strands. Lemon helps to brighten and tone blonds, while brunettes are renewed with the clarifying botanical, rosemary. The heat and shower cap help to enhance the treatment by infusing and absorbing the mask in your hair shaft.

Hanging up the Hair Dryer!

In a quest to save time and my hair, I've been working on greening my haircare routine, starting with saying "so long" to my blow dryer and flat iron. My hair is naturally curly/wavy, and for years I have been frustrated with battling the curly underneath and straight, sometimes stringy layers on top. This usually resulted in blow drying and straightening my hair when I wanted it to look good, and a pony tail, stringy curls or cute hat when I didn't care... here's a shot of my curls on what was a "good (pre-Ouidad) day"

A while back, I was chatting with a friend on twitter, Lisa, of @cactusandivy on this very subject. Lisa has very curly hair and let me in on her secret to looking fabulous!
